A novel that spans three generations...?

I'm trying to remember the name of a novel i once read. A girl was in love with the richest kid in town. they eventually got together but the guy died in a war. Its separated into three parts and the second part tells the story of their kid, and the third part tells the story of the third generation. A young child tells the third part. He lives with his grandma and his father is a rock star I believe. i think the title may have the word forever in it. The cover has a ring on it. Oh yes and throughout the three generations, a ring is passed down and when it does nothing good happens.
